January 19th, 2017 Open Water Lake Erie Fishing Report

Well the ice is staying away this January on Lake Erie as we start the 2017 season. Boats are getting out and walleye are being caught.  Fish were taken this past week off the tip of Catawba by trolling deep husky jerks slow 1.0 mph in the top of the water column. There are fish stacked up all the way from the tip of Catawba to south of Green Island, as well as the areas around the reefs. Despite the consistent cool northern wind pattern the past couple of weeks across Lake Erie, the walleye trolling bite has remained fairly consistent. Even though the bite has not been fast and furious overall, the larger average size of fish helps to make up for the sometimes long wait between bites.
